Career Lab

What is Career Lab and how does it work?

Career Lab is an open, welcoming space, where current undergraduate and master's students can drop in for career help. You don't need an appointment. You don't even have to know exactly what you need. Just show up, stay as long as you like, and we will help you get moving in the right direction.

Come to Career Lab to:

  • Discover Post-Graduate Planning and Experiential Education resources and how to use them.
  • Learn how to use our web-based resources including the Career Search Guide, Handshake, Alumni Career Network (ACN), and MyCareer resources.
  • Review and revise resumes, CVs, cover letters, and other job search documents.
  • Get advice on setting up your LinkedIn profile and using LinkedIn for career exploration and extending your network.
  • Practice and get feedback on five of the most common interview questions: 1. Tell me about yourself. 2. What are your top strengths? 3. What's one of your weaknesses? 4. Where do you see yourself in five years? 5. Why should I hire you?
  • Prepare to attend a career fair or other networking event.
  • Master the basics of conducting an informational interview (aka informational meeting) as a means of exploring companies or career paths, and extending your network.
  • Get help with scheduling an individual appointment via Handshake, including advice on which appointment category and type to choose.

Who works in Career Lab?

Career Lab is staffed by Career Peers, upper class undergraduate or master's students who have participated in an intensive two-day career development training, as well as weekly ongoing professional development. Career Peers have participated in internships, co-ops, undergraduate research experiences, or other forms of experiential learning, so they have been in your shoes and are uniquely positioned to help you with your career needs.

Coming to Career Lab is a perfect first step and prepares you to meet with a career educator, where you can engage in self-assessment, explore major and career options, or develop your plans for search (internship, co-op, full-time) or application (graduate or professional school).
