Assistant Residential College Director - FYE

Position Purpose

The Assistant Residential College Director (ARCD) is a 10-month live-in position that supports the creation and facilitation of an integrated residential learning environment that moves first-year students toward achieving the goals of the undergraduate experience, working through the mission and goals of the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs. This embedded position works with their Residential College Director (RCD) supervisor to provide comprehensive leadership and support for a community of 230-480 first-year students. Immersed in the student community, the ARCD and RCD actively manage the learning experience at both the community and individual level, monitoring and supporting students' holistic academic, social, and personal development throughout their transition to CWRU and to successful retention to the second year.

July 30, 2018 - May 31, 2019

Position Requirements
  • All applicants must have obtained a bachelor's degree prior to the CWRU Fall 2018 academic semester to qualify for the ARCD graduate staff positions.
  • ARCD staff must be enrolled in graduate courses as a part-time/full-time degree-seeking student.
  • ARCD staff must be available to work 20 hours per week, with at least 10 hour of availability between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • ARCD staff will limit outside employment to graduate assistantships, part-time work, or other activities to less than 20 hours per week, excluding academic recesses. Note: International students are ineligible to hold assistantships or other outside employment.

Community Leadership

  • Provide comprehensive leadership and support for a community of 230-480 first-year students. Immersed in the student community, the ARCD acts as a resource and point of contact for first-year students, monitoring and supporting their holistic academic, social, and personal development.
  • Serve as the primary Advisor for the Community Council, providing guidance and support in recruitment, programming, advocacy, leadership development, and budget management.
  • Help direct the Community Leadership Team, consisting of the RCD, ARCD, 6-12 undergraduate Resident Assistants, and Community Council, in establishing programs, initiatives, projects, and procedures that create the academic and residential experience.

Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Provide leadership and support to the Residential College Staff Team, consisting of the RCD, ARCD, and 6-12 undergraduate Resident Assistants. Support the RCD in planning and facilitating weekly staff meetings and ongoing opportunities for individual and team development.
  • Supervise 3-6 Resident Assistants, facilitating developmental 1:1 meetings, supporting programming and community development efforts, and providing ongoing feedback/evaluations for supervisees.

Crisis Management & Student Support

  • Maintain, manage, and execute a system of intervention and referral to support the health, wellness, and safety of residential students through personal contacts with students and faculty and staff partners across campus. Serve in a Supervisor On Call rotation and provide direct response to student crises for 4000 undergraduate students outside of business hours.
  • Conduct educational interventions for student issues, which may include personal follow up, student conduct, mediation, and other means of student support.

Departmental Leadership

  • Assist with planning, presenting, and implementing departmental paraprofessional staff training of Resident Assistants, including Fall Training and Winter Training.
  • Support and participate in the Residence Life recruitment and selection processes for professional, graduate, and undergraduate staff.
  • Participate in Residence Life and First Year Experience Meetings; Serve on at least one departmental committee, with option to serve on more based on need and staff interest.

Facilities Management/Administration

  • Assist the RCD with Residence Life administrative processes, including but not limited to, residential college budget management, and program tracking, purchasing, and support for RAs/Community Council.
  • Assist the RCD with Facilities and University Housing administrative processes, including but not limited to, room assignments, census, hall opening and closings, health and safety inspections, and room changes.
  • Maintain availability to staff and residents, including posted office hours in the residential college.
Compensation and Benefits
  • $13,217.00 stipend per 10-month contract ($300 merit increase per year of service)
