Resident Assistant - Academic Year 2018-2019

POSITION OVERVIEW

Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who work in teams to support residential communities that feel like home, are focused on learning, and are inclusive and respectful of all members.

The RA position is a 10-month live-in, on campus position that supports the creation and facilitation of an integrated residential learning environment that moves undergraduate students through the process of achieving the goals of the undergraduate experience, working through the mission and goals of the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs. This embedded position works directly with their Residential College/Community Director (RCD) and Assistant Residential College/Community Director(s) (ARCD(s)) supervisors to support a residential community of first year, second year, or upperclass students. Immersed in the student community, the RAs actively facilitate the learning experience at both the community and individual level, supporting students' holistic academic, social, and personal development throughout their transition to CWRU, successful retention throughout their academic experience, and through graduation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Community Development

    1. Develop the residential community ensuring that students create a just and humane community that cultivates meaningful interactions, fosters individual student success, and creates purposeful environments to support the Division of Student Affairs student learning domains: Social and Emotional Competence, Purpose and Intentionality, Cultural and Human Appreciation, Community Engagement, and Problem Solving
    2. Assist in developing community expectations that encourage students to become mindful community members, ethical leaders, well rounded flourishing students
    3. Assess the needs and interests of residential students and create residential communities, interactions, and programs that complement and enhance the Undergraduate Experience Model with emphasis on the First Year Experience, Second Year Experience, or Upperclass Experience
    4. Role model and reinforce positive behaviors consistent with divisional values and university policies and procedures in all contexts including residence halls, online forums, campus events, and the campus community
    5. Abide by local, state, and federal laws
  2. Team Member & Staff Development

    1. Serve as a supportive team member. This may include but is not limited to communicating in a timely manner, taking initiative, having a presence in the community and with staff, building trust and a mutual respect across staff, etc.
    2. Participate in the ongoing training, selection, and evaluation processes of the department
    3. Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and training programs which may include but is not limited to August RA Training, Inservice trainings throughout the semesters, Winter Training, staff development, and other training as determined by Residence Life leadership and staff supervisors
    4. Know and share highlights, concerns, and issues in your community with other team members
    5. Role model a commitment to personal and professional development
  3. Community Response & Student Support

    1. Execute a system of intervention and referral to support the health, wellness, and safety of residential students
    2. Participate in an ongoing on-call rotation and utilize the Non-Emergency and Emergency Protocol when responding to applicable situations
    3. Report student concerns and possible policy violations promptly
    4. Maintain confidentiality
    5. Report all potential sexual misconduct. All RAs are Non-Confidential resources and are mandatory reporters for sexual misconduct. RAs are obligated to report any information regarding sexual misconduct for all students at CWRU even if it occurs outside of the RA's residence hall or when the RA is off-duty
    6. Encourage residents to develop meaningful relationships with faculty outside of the classroom
    7. Promote healthy and appropriate academic behaviors
    8. Connect residents with Undergraduate Deans and Residence Life Supervisors to support each resident's academic success
  4. Advocate for Social Justice & Diverse Perspectives

    1. Create a welcoming and comfortable living environment for community members
    2. Address issues of intolerance, hate, and injustice in a thorough and prompt manner
    3. Engage students in new activities that may open new perspectives on issues and topics
  5. Administrative

    1. Complete administrative responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner. These responsibilities may include but are not limited to: incident reports, room inventories, community development plans, bulletin boards, room changes (check-in/check-out procedures), maintenance requests, distribution of information, and daily communication
    2. Maintain the proper use of master keys, key cards, building keys, ID cards, passwords and other access mechanisms to ensure the safety and security of residents and their belongings
    3. Support the smooth functioning of the residential facilities and respond to resident concerns. Instruct and guide residents in completing occupancy, room inventory, room change, work order, and facility emergency response procedures
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned.

CONTACTS
  • Daily interaction with undergraduate students. Daily interaction with staff team and supervisors.
  • Regular contact with the Office of Residence Life, Residence Hall Association, and community councils.
  • Regular contact with the Offices of CWRU Police and Public Safety, University Health & Counseling Services, University Housing, University Facilities.
  • Occasional contact with Offices of Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Disability Resources, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Greek Life, Career Center, Educational Services for Students.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • For Spring Semester 2018, applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic standing for the most recent semester in order to apply.
  • For Summer 2018 and 2018-2019 Academic Year, applicants who are first year students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, a minimum 2.0 fall semester GPA, and be in good academic standing in order to apply. Applicants who are second year students or above must have a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA, a minimum 2.25 GPA for the fall semester, and be in good academic standing in order to apply. All hired Summer 2018 and 2018-2019 Academic Year RAs must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA, a minimum 2.5 GPA for the spring 2018 semester, and be in good academic standing.   • Once hired, students must maintain the GPA minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic standing. The GPA is calculated using earned credit hours only. If an RA's cumulative GPA falls below 2.5 and/or the RA's most recent semester GPA falls below 2.5, they will be ineligible to serve as an RA, their RA Agreement will be terminated. In some cases, RAs who have served in their position for at least one semester may be eligible to appeal. RAs who have not yet begun their roles are ineligible to appeal.
  • RA candidates need to be in good standing with the University.
  • Candidates on disciplinary probation with the university will be ineligible to hold a Resident Assistant position. Candidates on deferred university probation will be eligible.
  • All RA applicants must be enrolled at Case Western Reserve University. RAs are not eligible to participate in co-op as students must be registered for 6 credit hours or more to work on campus. [updated 11.17.17].
  • Applicants need to live in the residence halls for at least two semesters by the start of their RA agreement (Students starting at CWRU in Fall 2017 are not eligible for a Spring 2018 position, but are eligible for the 2018-2019 academic year position).
  • The RA position requires an average of 15 hours per week. University regulations limit on-campus employment to a total of 20 hours per week. If an RA applicant has on-campus employment they would like to keep if selected as an RA, applicants should consult with Student Employment. It is assumed that RAs will work irregular hours and the number of hours might vary by week during the semester. RAs hours will be spent in a variety of ways including but not limited to in their community, with their staff, and completing administrative tasks.
  • Once hired, RAs must limit outside activities during the period of employment to a maximum of 20 hours per week. Outside activities include, but are not limited to, employment, non-academic assistantships, and student organizations.
  • All Spring 2018 RAs must be available to participate in Winter Training beginning January 11, 2018.

  • All 2018-2019 Academic Year RAs must be available to participate in Fall Training beginning early August. The final date will be included in the resident assistant agreement.
COMPENSATION
  • A $1,800 stipend with a $100-per-year merit increase for returning staff members
  • Upperclass RAs will receive an additional $90 for additional time in the role. Upperclass RAs work through the day after May graduation, including senior week
  • A single room

*Resident Assistants in first- and second-year areas will be required to purchase a meal plan.
