Semester Serves

Through the Semester Serves program, small groups of students volunteer together at a local nonprofit organization on a weekly basis. Each Semester Serves site has a leader who coordinates the group and provides transportation to and from the site.

Semester Serves sites require at least one semester of commitment. Students interested in joining one of the sites below must register for their preferred site through OrgSync. If your preferred site is full, please contact Adrian Griffin to be added to the waitlist. Spots are limited at the sites, so they will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Monday America SCORES 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. Provide creative writing or soccer instruction support to elementary and middle school youth as part of America SCORES' after-school program at Wade Park School.
Lifelong Learning 2:15 to 5:30 p.m. Tutor and provide homework assistance to youth in Grades K-12 at an after school program at Rainbow Terrace, an affordable housing community.
Tuesday Urban Squash 4 to 6:45 p.m. Tutor middle and high school students in various subjects through Urban Squash, an after-school program that teaches the sport of squash and offers academic support to local students. The program is held at the Veale Athletic Center.
Thea Bowman Center 5 to 8 p.m. Assist adults with high school coursework as they work to complete their GED. Contact to learn about CCEL Serves Leader opportunities for this site!
Thursday Asian Services in Action 4:45 to 8:15 p.m. Provide after school tutoring support and English-language practice to middle school and high school youth in Lakewood who are refugees.
Seeds of Literacy 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Assist adults with high school coursework as they work to complete their GED.
Saturday Eliza Bryant Village 10 a.m. to Noon Provide one-on-one friendly visits to elderly nursing home residents in their rooms who are unable to leave their room due to physical limitations or personal choice.
Sunday Malachi House 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Help with chores and general household tasks and socialize with residents at an organization that provides end of life, hospice-like care for those with no caregivers and limited financial resources.
