Aaron Hickman: Sustainable Food Initiative

Aaron Hickman
My Project

I am studying the University Farm's new Food Program, which aims to provide new educational opportunities to faculty and students, study local food production in a sustainable way using mostly organic methods, and to deliver fresh foods and herbs for use in campus dining halls. The goal of this research is to provide the University Farm staff information for future growth feasibility of this initiative. I am calculating the current and projected carbon footprint, labor usage and requirements, and up-to-date harvest statistics for the program, as well as assisting with day-to-day operations.

My Experience

As a student at a non-agriculture school, agriculture and farming science is not a subject that is readily available. Through my research, I was exposed to organic farming techniques in an educational setting, learned about local food production and the impact and significance it will have on the future.
