Dates, Times and Places

Times
  • Use 5:30 p.m., not 5:30 p.m. tonight or 5:30 o'clock.

  • Use 4 p.m., not 4:00 p.m.

  • Use from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Do not use a hyphen (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) except in non-narrative copy where space is limited.

  • Use from 7 to 8 p.m. It is not necessary to repeat p.m.

  • Use midnight and noon (do not include "12"). Lowercase to be consistent with a.m. and p.m.

Days and Dates
  • Use yesterday, today and tomorrow for days immediately surrounding the day of publication. (This rule seldom applies to university publications.)

  • When referring to a date less than a week away, use the day of the week as well as the date.

  • When referring to a date more than a week away, use the date. Use the day of the week only for emphasis.

  • Omit d, th and st in dates: January 1, not January 1st.

Days, Dates and Years

When writing event information, the rule is that you use commas before and after a year, whenever you also have specified a date. For example:

  • The event will be held from March 3, 2008, to March 9, 2008, in the park.
  • The event will be held from March 3 to March 9 in the park. (No commas because the years are omitted.)

You also use a comma between a weekday and date, which is independent of the usage of commas in the date. For example:

  • The event will be held from Saturday, March 3, 2008, to Sunday, March 9, 2008, in the park.
  • The event will be held from Saturday, March 3 to Sunday, March 9 in the park. (No comma is needed.)
Places
  • Give days, dates, times and places of events in that order.
Example: Registration is Thursday, August 19, at 3 p.m., in Adelbert Gym.

  • When giving locations on campus, state the room number before the building and give the building's full name.
Example: Forms can be picked up in 14 Adelbert Hall.
