Lists

Formatting Lists
  • The first word of each item should be capitalized.

  • If none of the items in the list is a complete sentence, no punctuation should follow the items.

  • If one or more of the items is a sentence, each item should be punctuated with a period. The construction of the items in a list should be parallel.

  • In some context, numerals may be used to identify them. Arabic numerals followed by periods should be used.

  • When items are enumerated within a paragraph, rather than broken out into a list, an arabic numeral enclosed in parentheses should precede each item.
Example: There are a number of reasons that this plan will not work: (1) we don't have the time; (2) we don't have the money; (3) we don't have enough people; and (4) we don't really want it to work.
